The Rockaways: Rockaway Park

Rockaway Park is a middle class neighborhood located on the Rockaway Peninsula. It lies between Jamaica Bay to the north and the Atlantic Ocean to the south. On July 1, 1897 the Village of Rockaway Park was incorporated into the city of Greater New York.

Pictured is Tribute Park located on Beach 116th Street and Beach Channel Drive. The park was opened by Mayor Bloomberg in 2005 to honor the lives lost on September 11th. The park features a mosaic centerpiece, a “Firemans Walk” and a granite rock engraved with all the 343 firefighters lost that day.

Compared to the rest of the country, Rockaway Park’s cost of living is 72.40% higher than the U.S. average.
