Southwestern Queens: Richmond Hill
Richmond Hill is a mixed middle class neighborhood in Queens. Richmond Hill is named after the hill created by the debris collected while glaciers spiraled down North America. One of the bloodiest battles in the Revolutionary War occurred in Richmond Hill in 1776, dubbed the Battle of Long Island.
Pictured is the former RKO Keith’s Theatre located on Hillside Ave. Built in 1929 the theatre was short lived and by 1968 it was converted into a bingo hall & flea market. In 2003, the building reached landmark status.
In the classic movie “Goodfellas” Henry Hill meets his wife Karen in the now closed Salernos Restaurant on Hillside Ave in Richmond Hill.
