Northeastern Queens: Oakland Gardens

Oakland Gardens is a middle class neighborhood, located in Northern Queens. Because its proximity to Bayside many people consider this area “Southern Bayside.”

Pictured is the Alley Pond Park Trail. This is the entrance off off Springfield Blvd. The trail is used multi-purposely by both bicyclists & pedestrians. The Alley Pond Park Trail was formerly just a section of the larger Long Island Motor Parkway.

The Long Island Motor Parkway was the 1st road designed for automobile use in the United States. Privately built by William Vanderbilt II, the Parkway made its debut in 1908. The Parkway however, was short lived. It was taken over by the state of New York in lieu of back taxes in 1938.
