Northeastern Queens: Kew Gardens

Kew Gardens is an upper middle class neighborhood in central Queens. Kew Gardens is named after the well known botanical gardens in England. Densely populated residential area built with a large amount of apartment buildings, containing a very culturally diverse community.

Pictured is the Queens Borough Hall built in 1940. Queens Borough Hall is a civic center designed for Queens residents. Marriages are popular here, as they are presided over by the borough’s deputy clerk in a small chapel.

On March 28, 1964, 28 year old Kitty Genovese was murdered in a busy section of Kew Gardens. It is alleged that 38 people were present but no one alerted police.
