Southeastern Queens: Holliswood

Holliswood is a mixed upper class neighborhood. Holliswood was created by Frederick Dunton in 1884. Dunton designed the curving streets and gave them Spanish or Latin names. Dunton also built an enormous mansion on the self-titled Dunton Ave named Hollis Hall. After Dunton died, Hollis Hall was sold during the Prohibition era and became a speak easy named Brown’s Chophouse.

Pictured is the Holliswood Hospital. Holliswood Hospital is located on Palermo Street, and recently closed due to financial hardship this past summer on August 12, 2013.
