Hammel Houses is a low income New York City Housing Authority development in the Rockaway peninsula. Hammel Houses consists of 14 buildings, 6 and 7-stories high with 712 apartments housing some 1,994 residents. Completed April 30, 1955, the 14.16-acre complex is bordered by Beach 81st and Beach 86th Streets, Hammels and Rockaway Beach Boulevards.
Pictured is the entrance to the Hammel Playground located at Rockaway Beach Boulevard. Originally known as Hammel Houses Playground, the New York City Parks Department shortened the name when it took jurisdiction.
This January, The Hammel Houses Community Center gymnasium was reopened after extensive renovations due to Hurricane Sandy.
