Fort Tilden is a National Recreational Area on the grounds of a former US Army base, located in Rockaway Point. Fort Tilden, established in the early 1800’s, was named after Samuel J. Tilden, one time governor of New York state and Democratic Presidential candidate. Fort Tilden is a Historic District made up primarily of natural area of beach forest and maritime.
Pictured is the Rockaway Theatre, a high end theatre company located at Building T-4 on the complex. Opened in 1997 the building took over the old Post Theatre a movie house for soldiers.
On December 14, 2014 the Rockaway Arts Alliance will hold a Gingerbread Decorating House for children at Building T-149 in Fort Tilden.
